Purpose: The Medical Director in the Cardiovascular Medical Therapeutic Area provides administrative, scientific and clinical expertise for the development of new drugs in the area of cardiovascular disease (including atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and metabolic syndrome), critical care, and inflammation. He/she supervises clinical research physicians, providing guidance with respect to corporate strategy and goals, business planning, clinical plan development and career development.

Primary Position Responsibilities: ?
Medical Therapeutic Area leadership:
-- Communicate corporate strategy with regard to policies and procedures
-- Direct administration of program decision activities on global basis
-- Supervise TA medical staff
? Scientific and administrative guidance and input to program teams in areas of cardiovascular disease, critical care and inflammation. Provide direction with regard to clinical plan, medical review and corporate processes. Review and approval of overall clinical strategy, clinical plans and protocols.
? Support DHT?s (drug hunting teams) for Atherosclerosis/Metabolic Syndrome.
? Monitor status of discovery projects to anticipate clinical resource requirements.
? Represent cardiovascular medical Program teams at corporate committees.
? Identification, recruitment and mentoring of key personnel.
? Support business development activities by providing timely and valid assessments of potential in-license candidates.
? Integrate clinical planning within the cardiovascular division and across therapeutic areas, maximize synergies between therapeutic areas.
? Assist other product/program team directors with regard to processes, budget and business planning, corporate clinical plan process, assessment of resource needs and recruitment.
? Negotiate and interface with outside institutions, regulatory agencies, collaborators (CRO?s/ARO?s) and investigators.
? Direct supervision of CRPs in therapeutic area. Allocation and management of resources. Oversee career development, recruitment of personnel for program team personnel in cardiovascular on global basis.
? Work with geographic area medical components to assure consistency of clinical planning and business practices and coordination of program team activities.
Requirements: Education and Work Experience Required
? Must have an M.D. and be board certified or eligible in Internal Medicine/Cardiology (preferred).
? Should have extensive basic or clinical research experience with a record of scientific achievement. Experience in the pharmaceutical industry would be desirable.
? Experience in patient care is desirable
? Must have experience in the drug discovery and development process
