Director, Global External R&D Neuroscience

Key Objectives / Deliverables:

· Continuous communication / interface with internal leadership and decision makers in Neuroscience

· Leadership in the development of project concepts and execution of these projects when working with external groups

· Leadership of interactions with external organizations. Represent strategies and needs to external organizations (companies, investment groups, academic community and related organizations, government agencies, etc.)

· Leadership in the assessment of potential partnering and in-licensing opportunities and in the pre-due diligence technical assessments

· Leadership identifying and developing preferred business relationships that enable optimization of internal research and provide access to external technologies and innovation

· Leadership building long-term relationships which will include providing constructive technical feedback to potential partners at various stages of review, focusing on relationships in parallel to evaluations, and nurturing interactions

· Apply rigor in the assessment of external innovation and assess the strategic fit with needs (complementary, additive or synergistic)

· Apply a robust stage appropriate (early, intermediate and advanced) process in the review of external opportunities

· Provide recommendations on potential opportunities to Neuroscience leadership and other appropriate groups to accomplish timely and effective quality decisions

· Ensure integration of efforts through rigorous goal setting, effective teamwork, performance management, collaboration with groups, and a commitment to serving customers both inside and outside the Company

· Anticipate the evolution of the competition to gain advantage as it pertains to innovation acquisition and collaborations

· Focus on excellence in science and people, and a culture based on leadership and teamwork

· Ensure that all GER&D commitments are appropriately developed and are clearly communicated, with focus toward meeting and exceeding performance measures

· Create a work climate and culture exemplifying company values

· Foster and maintain effective partnerships and knowledge transfers within company

· Be actively respected as a resource of insights and information on current and future directions and trends

· Live daily the 'Ambassadorship role' with the highest standards

· 25-50% travel is anticipated (including OUS)



Minimum Requirements:

· PhD, MD, DSc or PhD-MD

· Experience and track record building scientific and collaborative relationships

· Minimum of 10 years experience in the pharmaceutical or related industry (Biotechnology R&D) and experience in basic and/or applied research

· Demonstrated knowledge of pharmaceutical discovery and development process including patents and trends that are shaping pharmaceutical innovation and business

· Demonstrated scientific knowledge in neuroscience research

· Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex information and analyses to a variety of scientific and non-scientific audiences

· Demonstrated strong interpersonal and leadership skills

· Ability to represent self, GER&D and company in a highly professional manner to outside groups

· Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to multitask efficiently

· Demonstrated operational and organizational experience and the ability to think with broad perspective while not losing sight of important details

· Experience of working in a matrix environment as well as leading and leveraging the matrix

· Outstanding interpersonal and negotiation skills and willingness and ability to deal with conflicts

· Demonstrated ability to make timely decisions and to cope with ambiguity

· Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills

· Demonstrated ability to work independently or as a member of a team depending on the situation

· Outstanding ability to understand and manage sensitivities when communicating and discussing with external groups with different philosophies, cultural backgrounds, perspectives, approaches, and specific needs
